Eid Fitri falls in June this year, which means a long holiday will be come. Indonesian spend their holiday as a homecoming celebration. Some people spend their long holiday to make quality times with their own self, family, or even with friends. So how about your holiday? Where do you spend your holiday? I would tell you how my holiday was. This time, I got a chance to have staycation in Plataran Borobudur for culinary tours and try some venues and dining in Plataran Borobudur Resort and Spa; and Plataran Heritage Borobudur Hotel and Convention Center.
My trip to Plataran Heritage Borobudur Hotel and Convention Center took me 1,5 hour from my home. Plataran Heritage Borobudur Hotel and Convention Center located in Dusun Tanjungan, Magelang. I used online transportation services for my trip. There’s something interesting that I want to share about my trip, I hope it will be useful for you. So I decided to use online transportation services because of some consideration. First, I don’t know the exact route to go there, so it would take me longer time if I just use google map as my guidance . I thought it would be much easier, since I’m not planning to go anywhere round. Moreover, I live in the northern part of Yogyakarta, so I think it would be more convenient if I use online transportation services. And yes, my decision was right! For you who never go there, the route towards the Plataran Borobudur area was difficult. The cost I’ve spent was affordable anyway. I also use transportation online services for my return trip. The driver told me that I am his first domestic customer who wants to go Plataran Borobudur. Then I conclude that many online transportation services are accustomed to having picks from here. So you don’t have to worry about using online transportation services for your trip to Plataran Borobudur area.
When I arrived in Plataran Borobudur area, we were warmly welcomed. They hold the same standard for all employee and staffs in Plataran Indonesia (Plataran has another properties across Indonesia). To be honest, it was my very first time to have such excellent service. FYI, there are two Plataran’s Properties in Borobudur area. First, they have Plataran Borobudur Resort and Spa as their signature property, consist of 21 private villas. The second one is the Plataran Heritage Borobudur Hotel and Convention Center. Our first destination is Stupa Restaurant that located in Plataran Heritage Borobudur Hotel and Convention Center.
Stupa Restaurant brings the authentic taste of Indonesian Specialities as their concept. This semi outdoor restaurant, which operates from 6am till 22pm, has an outstanding traditional atmosphere. You can feel it directly once you step in its location. The main restaurant has a Joglo architecture (the type of vernacular house of Javanese people) with green paddy field scenery accompanied by the strain of traditional Javanese music instruments, so peaceful. You could see butterflies flies over flowers around the Stupa restaurant. I rarely see butterflies near my home, but I can see a plenty of them here. Stupa restaurants served me some menus that they have, I’ll try to describe them as accurate as I can.
Like the other restaurants, they served an appetizer as an opening dish. I got a Star Fruit Salad as my appetizer, it’s been my favorite salad. The flavor was soooo good, a fresh slice of star fruit with sour sweet and spicy sauce, completing each other. It reminds me of rujak sauce, but with a different taste, not so sour and spicy. They keep their own taste of sauce, that win my tongue and my heart, haha. Oh, they also put grilled chicken into the salad. Could you imagine how good it will be?
Jump to the second menu that I got, Soup Nelayan (Fisherman Soup)! Such a unique name. Soup Nelayan taste like tom yum sauce, sour and spicy. It served with prawn, squid, and a big slice of fish fillet. The thing that I love from this soup was it has sheets of mushroom inside. Yes, I’m a mushroom lover, please don’t judge me haha. It was too spicy for my tongue but really can make me sip the soup over and over again. I recommend you to enjoy it immediately while it is hot or warm, as you please.
Stupa restaurants served me two kind of menu for the main course. Nasi Tibu and Bebek Bakar Sambal Plecing. I’ll describe Nasi Tibu (Tibu Rice) first to you. Nasi Tibu is an authentic food from Labuan Bajo. It has a unique presentation, especially for the rice. The turmeric rice was wrapped in a leaf and it was baked inside a bamboo, which taste like baked basil rice. Smells so nice. It has different aroma from nasi bakar. I thought the difference was because it was baked in the bamboo. Nasi Tibu comes with prawn stew, boiled cassava leaves, and yellow spicy fish. The cassava leaves was quite bitter for me. But this is perfect food for you who likes cassava leaves. The bitter flavors keep it balance. The portions are too big for just one person.
Next, the second menu Bebek Bakar Sambal Plecing (Roasted Duck served with Plecing Sauce) . The duck meat was easy to tear, the size was quite large and tasty. There was a spicy sauteed water spinach savory as a complement under the meat. Not forgetting the complementary plecing sauce. I recommend you to choose Bebek Bakar Sambal Plecing if you prefer a food with a strong taste of flavor.
As a closing menu, Stupa Restaurant served me the Rolled Cassava Wrap. This menu was made from fermented cassava as its wrapper, filled with grated coconut and jackfruit served with ice cream! It’s like lumpia at the first glance, but has an exactly different taste and texture. The filling taste like dadar gulung I would say, but sweeter because it has jackfruit inside. The taste of cassava was exquisite even just for a wrapper. Good portion to satisfy your hunger if you don’t want a heavy meal.
Overall, all the food in Stupa Restaurants has a huge portion for just a person, its price starts from IDR 60.000 – 145.000/menu. And starts from IDR 30.000 – 95.000/menu for the drinks.
My stomach cheers horay for the lunch this afternoon. After I’m stuffed out, I was then proceed to made a check in, so I can change my clothes and try the spa at Padma Spa (my body has gone stiff by the way). I would tell further more about Padma Spa in the next article.
Langit Menoreh Bar and Lounge
There’s one other interesting venue offered by Plataran Heritage Borobudur Hotel and Convention Center, it is the an Afternoon Tea at their rooftop bar named Langit Menoreh Bar and Lounge. It was placed in the 5th floor, and can be accessed by common visitors through the hallway of Stupa Restaurant. But, sadly, I missed the afternoon tea while I’m at Padma Spa. The afternoon spa available at 4-6pm.
You’ll enjoy the memorable afternoon tea accompanied by the beauty of Menoreh mountains, and if you are lucky enough you’ll able to see the exaggerating sunset. You could also see the hotel pool over there. I think, I was the one who are not lucky enough at the time. The sky was cloudy back then, so it was quite dark.
Even so, I can still feels the atmosphere of Langit Menoreh Bar and Lounge was calmly cool and relaxing as I spend the night there. The other plus thing was their decoration which keep it beautiful, it’ll be a good place for OOTD photos lighted with a fluorescent lamp.
The clock points at 8.30 pm which means it was the time to have a supper. It was actually quite late, but I felt that the room at Plataran Heritage Borobudur Hotel and Convention Center was too comforting, makes me won’t take my feet anywhere else. But then I gather some energy so I could gone downstairs to where the Menoreh Restaurant is.
The restaurant which operates from 6am-23pm offers us Indonesia and across Asian cuisine. I love their interior from its floor, furnitures, and so the lamps as it is classic but luxurious as well. Turns out, Menoreh Restaurant was designed in Modern Colonial look for its indoor and outdoor, completed with its garden and pool’s scenery.
Menoreh Restaurant is the hotel restaurant of Plataran Heritage Borobudur Hotel and Convention Center which serves daily breakfast, lunch, and dinner. We get special menu for tonight, chosen by the chef itself. Their service were warm, neat, and fast. The thing that I found interesting about them is that they got an open kitchen, so we could see how they taking care all of the foods that they served. It doesn’t take me long to have all the dish ready on my table. Before I take my chew on them, Chef Hendrik as one of the chef of Menoreh Restaurant comes to give me a brief explanation of all the dish.
We start with Salmon Tian. The presentation was beautiful, the taste was a mix of spicy and sour, but not too strong. There was also some fresh taste came from avocados which were beautifully arranged with dice slices of salmon. It was made complete with the existence of caviar and bell pepper puree make it exceptionally tasty.
Next, meet the soup team. They serve two kind of soup, Mushrooms cappuccino and Tom yum. I had a story for an intermezzo. My hands accidentally nudged the beautiful garnish from the Mushroom Cappuccino, so sadly. But lucky me, it was already photographed haha. Okay, back to the Mushroom soup. It served with crispy fried mushrooms (Ps: The thing that I’ve dropped earlier) and a pinch of cappuccino powder as its topping. And for the mushrooms soup, it was the best mushroom soup that I’ve ever tried. Ever! There’s no strange aroma or any harsh powder which is usually found in mushroom soup. The taste was like cappuccino texture but it was tastier, and not queasy at all. This mushroom soup was made from oyster mushroom tempura and truffle oil. And don’t forget, this is the best mushroom soup in my opinion.
The second ones was Tom Yum Soup with an authentic spicy, sour, and salty taste. Like we all know that Tom Yum Soup was the traditional prawn soup from Thailand. I really like the taste of Tom Yum Soup because it fits my tongue. It reminds me of the Tom Yum that I’ve eaten in Bangkok, so authentic!
Proceed to the main course. Menoreh Restaurant served two kind of main course menu which is Roasted Chicken Breast and Sea Bass Fillet. This Roasted Chicken Breast was so special, the chicken filled with spinach that wrapped by beef bacon with creamy puy lentils. Also they put some roasted veggies as its complement. It has a unique taste, it’s like soya but not too strong.
The second was Sea Bass Fillet; a big cut of salmon with right and spread evenly cooked. It has rice and potato ecailes bell pepper as it’s sauce. I was interested with the rice in this menu. The rice doesn’t look like common rice we usually eat. Their texture was unique because the grain is 2 or even 3 times larger than the usual rice, not mushy, but also not too hard. It like half cooked rice but not that hard so it gives a variety effect as we chew, and feels lighter.
As the main course complement, they have Brinjal Chips, a slice of aubergine with spicy seasoning, garlic, and chicken floss. The overall taste was completely tasty, light, and were truly made to make you can’t stop chewing.
There’s one menu which was my super favorite as as the closing of the dinner and it is a must try, which is Stupa Coffee Trio. This dessert consists of three different dish that were made from coffee. There were pudding, pie tart, and ice cream. They were veraciously good and melted in your mouth. Their taste of coffee was light but they still got a strong aroma of it. Their sweetness were just right but it may vary to our consideration. I personally don’t like foods that are too sweet. Even though they were primarily made from coffee, this dessert was not bitter at all. The pudding had the taste of coffee milk, the pie taste like espresso, while the ice cream was like a very light cappuccino. I’m not a fan of coffee, I am even not a regular coffee drinker but this dessert was exceed my expectation. I could finish and still craving for more. This menu is the one the menu that will be missed so dearly and will exactly make be back to Menoreh Restaurant over and over again. It was a very must try, especially if you are not a coffee lover but has a staggering desire to sip coffees in a different way. It was the best menu from Menoreh Restaurant for me.
Menoreh Restaurant offer you foods that priced from IDR 55.000 – 240.000 /menu, while the drinks price were starts from IDR 55.000 – 135.000 /menu. Their serving size was relatively regular.
That night were ended with a good well sleep. The first night at Plataran Heritage Borobudur Hotel and Convention Center was so comfortable, and you don’t have to worry for your culinary needs as they had Stupa Restaurant, Langit Menoreh Bar & Lounge and also Menoreh Restaurant which could satisfy your tongue for sure. I feel obliged to Plataran Borobudur as all their staff were so nice and very helpful. There will be more interesting things on Plataran Borobudur in the next article. So, stay tuned!
